The characters are annoying, and nearly every scene ends with an awkward moment, as if you were watching robots desperately trying to act like humans.Īs for the story itself, the game attempts to tell you that your play on the court matters. NBA 2K23’s M圜areer story doesn’t have any of that ridiculous fun. But the movie was a good time, and I still remember Kevin Costner’s character calling the Seahawks GM a pancake-eating (insert expletive here). There’s no way that would happen in real life. For example, look at Draft Day, starring Kevin Costner. My experience in this NBA 2K23 review is very similar to previous versions of the game.ĭon’t get me wrong, a sports story doesn’t have to be realistic to be enjoyable. It’s absurdly long (thanks in part to traveling around The City for quests), your choices feel meaningless, and it just doesn’t make any sense. To keep it short, the narrative in M圜areer this year is frustrating in the worst of ways. If you think that sounds like a lot of not playing basketball in this basketball game, you’re 100% right. Along the way, you’ll do things like earning your way to the starting lineup, taking part in another one of those hot-take factory sports talk shows, obtaining a Gatorade from a local shop owner, and helping out a vegan hot dog vendor. Why is this a problem? Turns out that fans of the team who drafted you really wanted Shep Owens instead of you.įrom there, you are on a mission to win over the fanbase and prove that you were the better player. Unfortunately for MP (and you as the person who has to endure this nonsensical story), another player named Shep Owens gets drafted as the 19th pick. Sadly, those aren’t really optional quests anymore.Īt the start of NBA 2K23’s M圜areer, your MyPlayer (once again called MP) gets drafted 18th overall to the team of your choosing. In last year’s review of NBA 2K22, I applauded Visual Concepts for allowing players the choice to be the kind of NBA player they wanted to be via optional quests throughout The City. M圜areer: A NBA Career Mode Without Much Basketball So, how does NBA 2K23 measure up with our review? As a M圜areer player, the answer to that is pretty disappointing. NBA 2K22 made some good strides with its MyPlayer Builder and gameplay, even if the game was filled with enough microtransactions and advertisements to make EA jealous. NBA 2K21 was a decent jump from the previous generation. Even the pressure and speed of your flick will matter – allowing players to pull off slick tricks on the court. We are in year three of NBA 2K on next-gen consoles. More advanced players will be able to show off their skills with the way they flick the control sticks. The more complex movements that comes with the improved controls also introduces new animations. Ball handling and physics have also changed, being improved to be much more realistic, giving you more accurate trajectory arcs for your long threes. ![]() There have been slight adjustments to the shot control as well as layup release, giving you the most influence you ever had in shooting the ball to the ring. The next generation of consoles also gives you more control on how the players move. ![]() The sweat simulation is just the icing on the cake. The ray-tracing technology makes everything even more realistic with its accurate depictions of light and reflections. We’re finally exiting the uncanny valley and are being treated with genuinely realistic-looking renders. The added realism in NBA 2K21 can even pass its images for real, like actual photographs with an unusual Instagram filter. Check out the side-by-side graphical comparison of the PS4 version versus the PS5 version by Youtuber kforkevo below: While the current-gen has made leaps and bounds in terms of graphics upgrades, next-gen is just on a whole new level. The most obvious difference is the huge leap in graphical fidelity. But there are just some features that will make us drop our controllers in favor of the new one in the next couple of days. We’ve already played the current-gen version, and it’s been swell so far. ![]() ![]() We’re all excited to get our hands on the PS5 and Xbox Series version of NBA 2K21, especially us who have the Mamba Forever Edition (which pays great homage to Kobe, by the way).
